Are you 18 or over? As of last April yes! /o/
Canon: 07-Ghost
Character: Hakuren Oak
Timeline: Chapter 86, specifically after that ill-fated ball he attended.
Personality:
“Beauty is a sin.”
As he was raised as an Oak, an elite family with many influential connections, Hakuren can be rather vain and more often than not presents himself that way in several situations. This mostly occurs when he feels uncomfortable or out of his depth, for example, when meeting strangers for the first time or when physical appearances are brought up. He goes as far as to carry a mirror around in his clothes with him, showing he is extremely self-conscious about his looks. He has another vain Oak quality-- a desire to be recognized and appreciated for things he excels at. This was shown when he got upset that Teito was ignoring him during the examinees’ practice at Kor hunting even though most of the other examinees took notice.
“…I have no obligation to answer to you.”
Another aspect of his personality that greatly defines him as an Oak is his political prowess. He often phrases answers to questions he does not want to answer very impartial or vague, like the quote above. He is able to deal easily with people who have a haughty attitude due to this political savviness. Hakuren also has very good manners and is very polite, some of the things that help when in a situation where offending someone has great consequences.
“Good grief, you really are a troublesome guy.”
In comparison, when around people he trusts, like Teito or the three Bishops, he acts more open and carefree. He will show when he’s annoyed, worried or happy; things that, generally, can be seen as weaknesses when partaking in politics. He also revealed a caring and very mother hen-like side to him, always acting as Teito’s schedule keeper (telling him to go to sleep or to go to dinner), telling him in a letter to watch his health or worrying when he is injured. Another example when of his caring side is displayed is when he helped Teito carry a convict that no one else would help to the infirmary, despite not being friends with Teito at the time.
Tying in with being caring in the last example, he is also very fair and impartial to who he helps. He, like Teito and unlike those around them at the time, felt the church was right in giving help to any who needed it, like the convict, not just those that always followed the church. Hakuren also was the one to notice and point out after that convict was killed, that it could have been a member of the church whom killed him. He didn’t pretend that the church members could do no wrong, only acted in an unbiased and just way.
Hakuren is very knowledgeable and studious. This was shown when he helped Teito study for the Bishop’s exam, had known the layout of the church above and beyond what he had to (had even known where the arch-bishop’s room was), had memorized all the scriptures in their church and showed great prowess in advanced math.
“As my father doesn’t need to be ideal, I too don’t need to be my father’s ideal.”
Hakuren doesn’t have a great relationship with his father and it is a large part of his motivations towards certain goals, including joining the church. When he was young, his mother fell ill and, though a simple visit from someone from the church could fix it, his father refused to seek help, claiming that it would disgrace the Oak name. This had left a lot of resentment in Hakuren that had only started to abate after he joined the church and met Teito.
His mother was luckily cured one night by a passing bishop (who turned out to be Bishop Frau). This incident inspired Hakuren to take a path away from the military and politics, where the Oak family held strong influences, towards the church where he could help as many people as he could.
“I love this job. However, continuing to rebel against my father…Aren’t I throwing away the potential to save many more of the weak?”
This quote came after a revelation brought about by Bishop Castor. His father had sent Hakuren a note saying to go and tutor the princess. Initially, Hakuren refused. When Castor saw his apprentice being narrow-minded he stepped in, where he showed Hakuren a hospital and told him how, during the Raggs war, horrible things were done to the people and covered up by the government. Hakuren was appalled and realized that, as the princess’ tutor, he could be a voice for the common people that the royal court will have to listen to.
Background:
Hakuren is a teen born into the Oaks family. The Oaks are a noble house in the Barsburg Empire and the God House in district 2. They are often recognizable as Oaks because they share many of the same physical genetic traits, from their slim limbs to their light and fair complexion.
When Hakuren was a child he was always (and still is) more attached to his mother than his father. His relationship with his father deteriorated even further after his mother fell ill and was infected by a Kor, something that was easily treated by the Church. However, his mother almost died when his father refused to get her help, claiming that such an act would sully the Oaks’ reputation. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back as it were. Hakuren’s relationship was his father was irreparable after that.
Luckily, Hakuren’s mother recovered. Bishop Frau had snuck in one night and healed her on his own accord. By chance, Hakuren had walked in to find him and his mother who was miraculously healed.
Seeing Frau help his mother instilled a great sense of purpose in Hakuren-- he wanted to become a bishop and help people too. This contradicted the Oaks’ normal and expected role of being in the Military or positions of political power. Hakuren broke off from his family when he was eleven to study at the church and become a bishop. By the time the story starts, he is sixteen and going into the bishop exams partnered with Teito Klein, his room mate and soon-to-be best friend.
After passing the exam, Hakuren became the bishop apprentice assigned to Bishop Castor. It was Castor’s job to now train Hakuren into a bishop though practical experience. During this training, they travelled through the districts of the empire. At one point Hakuren gets a letter from his father, telling him to become the princess of Barsburg Empire’s tutor. Initially he refuses because he wanted nothing to do with helping the Barsburg Empire and their uncaring ways. However, after being shown an example of one of the many cover ups done by the Empire by Castor, he agreed to take the position as to become a voice in the princess’ court that can hear, and actually cared for, the everyday people.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Hakuren has the ability of controlling an energy called Zaiphon. Of all the Zaiphon types, offensive, healing, and manipulative, he can use offensive. Zaiphon usually manifests in the air as words, and the words often reflect the emotion used to cast them. The church members also use Zaiphon to write letters to each other. Church members, as a primary part of their job, exterminate Kor and they do this by channeling their Zaiphon through a bascule (German for staff) or other similar weapons.
He is very fast when he fights, and is good at politics and scholarly pursuits.
Hakuren’s hobbies consists of handcrafts and gaining knowledge. He has a talent for cooking and cutting hair as well.
Sample Journal Post:
[Activating the PCD with his Zaiphon, Hakuren held it up in front of himself, a serious look on his face.]
Hello, is anyone there? If there is, would you mind telling me the nearest way to the Barsburg Palace, or to where I could find Bishops Frau, Castor or Labrador, or a teen about this height [Hakuren held his hand up near his eyes and nose] named Teito Klein?
[Giving a tight polite smile, he continued]
Any information you can give me of the people I just mentioned would really be appreciated.
[A brief view of the background of rocks and the Wasteland is viewable when he adjusts his grip to shut the PCD off.]
Sample RP:
When Hakuren woke up he expected to be in his room at the palace, not a rocky stretch of land he had never seen before, though it did sort of remind him of the Eye of God…
Hakuren sighed and stood up, brushing the dust off his white bishop’s apprentice uniform. As he looked around, he mentally began to prioritize what needed to be done. He needed to find a city and get back to the palace, Teito was still there and didn’t remember him, or even Mikage!
At that thought, his worry increased tenfold. He really needed to find out what happened while he was away from Teito to cause him to forget all that happened at the church. Heck, he needed to find out how he got here and the quickest way back…
Breaking out of his thoughts for now -there was time for that later— he pulled a small device out of his pocket that he felt when brushing the dirt off. It was slightly smaller than his bishop’s pass... Fiddling around with it, he decided to try putting Zaiphon in it to see if that would get it to work, it having a similarity to the communication machines. To Hakuren’s delighted surprise it lit up. Holding his hand above it he decided to see if he could put the Zaiphon inside of it as a message to his friends like the letter centers of home.
Smiling at the success he decided to plan out the message he needed to send out.
